What is the Braille Translator?

This converter writes basic English Grade 1, also called uncontracted Braille, as Unicode Braille cells. Each printed letter is represented explicitly, while a capital sign precedes an uppercase letter and a number sign starts a run of digits. Unicode cells are useful for learning, previews, and compatible digital text; they are not a substitute for a correctly prepared BRF file, an embosser workflow, or a qualified Braille transcriber. Grade 2 contractions, mathematical notation, music Braille, and language-specific Braille rules require a specialist translator and are intentionally not guessed here.

How to Use the Braille Translator

1

Choose a direction

Use Text to Braille for ordinary English text, or Braille to text for Unicode cells you received or copied.

2

Review signs and cells

Uppercase letters receive ⠠ and number sequences begin with ⠼. Use the reference grid to see the six-dot cell assigned to each letter.

3

Copy with the right purpose

Copy Unicode cells for digital display. For accessible publishing or embossing, verify the output with appropriate Braille software and a qualified reviewer.

Frequently Asked Questions — Braille Translator

Is this Grade 1 or Grade 2 Braille?
This tool generates and reads supported uncontracted English Grade 1 cells. It does not apply Grade 2 contractions or specialist notation.
Why are capital and number signs visible?
In Braille, capitalization and numbers use indicator cells before the following character or sequence. Showing them makes the conversion auditable instead of hiding important context.
Can I use this to make an accessible document?
Use it for learning and digital previews. Professional Braille production needs the appropriate standard, language rules, formatting, and quality review.
Does it support images or scanned Braille?
No. This page converts typed Unicode Braille cells and plain text; it does not perform image recognition.
