Best Free Grammarly Alternative in 2026 — No Premium Paywall
Grammarly blocks most features behind a $30/month paywall. We tested 7 free alternatives that give you grammar checking, spell check, and style suggestions without paying.
The Grammarly Problem
Grammarly is the most recognised grammar checker in the world — but its free tier is deliberately crippled:
- Free tier: Basic spelling and grammar only
- Premium ($30/month): Style suggestions, clarity improvements, tone detection, full plagiarism check
- Business ($15/user/month): Everything + team features
Most users need more than spell check but cannot justify $360/year for a writing tool. Here are the best free alternatives.

Best Options by Use Case
Best for Students: ilovetexts Grammar Checker

What you get:

Best for Developers: Hemingway App
Hemingway focuses on readability, not grammar rules. It highlights passive voice, complex words, and hard-to-read sentences. Free to use at hemingwayapp.com.
Best for Long-Form Writers: LanguageTool
LanguageTool's free tier catches more errors than Grammarly's free tier, especially for non-English writing. Install the browser extension for seamless integration.
Best for Academic Writing: ProWritingAid
The most comprehensive checker for academic tone, transitions, and style consistency. Expensive but has a free trial with no word limit.
What Grammarly Premium Actually Offers (Is It Worth It?)
Grammarly Premium's real value is clarity suggestions — it rewrites wordy sentences. For most users, the free alternatives cover 80% of this.
| Grammarly Premium Feature | Free Alternative |
|---|---|
| Spelling & grammar | LanguageTool (free) |
| Clarity rewrites | Hemingway App (free) |
| Plagiarism check | ilovetexts Plagiarism Checker (free) |
| Tone detection | Manual review |
| Word choice suggestions | QuillBot free tier |
The Privacy Argument
Every cloud grammar tool reads your text on their servers. For most writing this is fine — but for:
- Business proposals
- Legal documents
- Confidential emails
- Code comments
...you should use a tool that processes locally. Our Grammar Checker runs checks in your browser without storing your text on ilovetexts servers.
Conclusion
For 90% of users, the combination of:
1. [ilovetexts Grammar Checker](/writing-grammar-tools/grammar-checker) — for errors
2. Hemingway App — for readability
3. [Spell Checker](/writing-grammar-tools/spell-checker) — for final proofreading
...covers everything Grammarly Premium offers, at zero cost.
